RE: LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

The culmination of our Spring production cycle here at Black Hawk College was a Living Theatre collaboration with two other Quad-Cities colleges, Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. The Living Theatre Workshop directors, Jerry Goralnick and Lois Kagan Mingus, did a superb job of unifying the production of NOT IN MY NAME and bringing it to fruition. Because of the positive comments from the workshop production planners, the students, and hundreds of audience members, I wholeheartedly recommend the work of Jerry and Lois.

Planners and faculty from the schools were very pleased. Their comments ranged from "...the production remained true to the intentions of Judith Malina" to "...we rarely have the opportunity to experience this style of theatre first-hand..." Because this was a social-interactive piece on capital punishment, Jerry and Lois carefully guided each creative step in a respectful way, and treated our students like professional

Student responses included, "I learned how to interact and listen, how to understand other people and how to respect other's opinions", and "I'm all for doing this again." Jerry and Lois brought all the students with diverse backgrounds in the performing arts to a new level of live theatre and the students gained much.

Our outreach surveys indicated audience responses to be overwhelmingly positive. General comments were exemplified by, "Thank you for presenting the play. It was very moving." And ultimately there was this praise, "This kind of theatre matters!" As Director of Theatre at BHC, and as a theatre professional and educator of over 35 years, I can say this was one of the most professional pair of guest artists with which I have worked. I recommend the Living Theatre Workshops. Your audiences will appreciate them.

Sincerely,

Dan Haughey, Professor of Speech and Theatre Arts, Black Hawk College
President, Illinois Theatre Association
